SKU Generator — Consistent, Scannable Stock Keeping Units
Define a pattern — prefix, optional category, zero-padded sequence, optional random suffix — and generate up to 500 consistent SKUs in one click. Copy them, download a CSV, or send them straight to the bulk barcode generator to get scannable labels.
Good SKUs are boring on purpose: uppercase, short, structured, and meaningless enough to survive reorganizations. This tool encodes those rules so you can't accidentally invent a mess.
What makes a good SKU
A SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) is your internal identifier — unlike UPCs, no one assigns them and no registry exists, which is exactly why they go wrong. The failure modes are always the same: SKUs that encode too much meaning ('BLUE-TSHIRT-M-2024' breaks when you add colors), inconsistent lengths that sort badly in spreadsheets, ambiguous characters (0 vs O) that staff misread, and punctuation that breaks barcode fonts or marketplace imports.
- Keep it under 12 characters where possible — fits labels and scans reliably
- Uppercase letters and digits only; dash as the only separator
- Structure: brand/category prefix + sequential number (OWL-TEE-0001)
- Never encode price, size or color directly — attributes change, SKUs shouldn't
- Avoid 0, O, 1, I, L in random parts (this generator's default charset already excludes them)
From SKU to barcode
SKUs earn their keep when they're scannable. Generate your list here, hit “Make barcodes for these,” and the values land in the bulk barcode generator preconfigured for Code 128 — the right symbology for internal SKUs (full ASCII, compact, every scanner reads it). Print, stick, scan, done. For retail products that will be sold by other stores, you need GS1 UPC/EAN codes instead — SKUs are for your own four walls.
SKU, UPC, GTIN, serial — who's who
SKU: yours, internal, free-form. UPC/EAN (GTIN): GS1-issued, global, required by retailers and marketplaces. Serial number: identifies one specific unit of a product, not the product type. A warehouse typically uses all three: the GTIN receives stock, the SKU organizes it, the serial tracks the exact unit out the door.
Frequently asked questions
Is the SKU generator free?
Yes — unlimited SKUs, CSV download, barcode pairing, no account. SKUs are your internal identifiers; there's no registry or fee involved, ever.
What pattern should I use for my SKUs?
Short prefix for brand or department + category code + zero-padded sequence: OWL-TEE-0042. Keep total length under ~12 characters, avoid encoding changeable attributes like color or size, and never reuse an old SKU for a new product.
SKU vs UPC — do I need both?
Selling through your own store/warehouse only? SKUs suffice. Selling through retailers or Amazon? You need GS1 UPC/EAN codes too — marketplaces reject SKUs as product identifiers. Most businesses maintain both: UPC for the outside world, SKU internally.
Can I make barcodes from these SKUs?
Yes — click 'Make barcodes for these' after generating and the list prefills the bulk barcode generator. Code 128 is preselected because it's the correct symbology for internal SKU labels.
How many SKUs can I generate?
Up to 500 per batch in the browser. Need more? Generate in batches by adjusting the sequence start, or use the CSV download and continue the numbering in Excel.
