Serial Number Generator — Random & Sequential
Generate up to 1,000 serial numbers per batch in three formats: grouped random (license-key style, ambiguous characters excluded), sequential with a custom prefix (asset and equipment numbering), or UUID v4 (software and databases).
Generation uses your browser's cryptographically secure random source and never touches a network — what you generate is known only to you.
Choosing a format
Grouped random (XK7M-9F3K-P2QD-8HJT) is for anything a human will read aloud or type: product keys, vouchers, redemption codes. The alphabet deliberately excludes 0/O and 1/I/L, and the groupings give the eye anchor points. Sequential (SN-000042) is for assets and equipment where order and gaps matter — you want to know unit 41 exists when 42 is in front of you. UUID v4 is for systems, not people: databases, APIs and software licenses that machines verify.
Randomness you can defend
Random serials are drawn from crypto.getRandomValues — the same CSPRNG that secures TLS sessions — not Math.random. With the default 4×4 grouped format there are 32¹⁶ ≈ 1.2×10²⁴ possibilities; guessing or collision is not a practical concern. Sequential formats are deterministic by design: same start, same list, every time, which is what you want when reprinting a destroyed asset tag.
Where generated serials get used
- Software licensing — issue one grouped key per purchase, validate against a server-side list
- Asset management — sequential numbers on laptops, tools and machinery, paired with Code 128 labels
- Warranty & returns — a serial per sold unit ties the physical item to the order record
- Vouchers & gift cards — grouped random codes that customers type without ambiguity
- Manufacturing lots — sequential unit IDs inside a batch, with the batch in a GS1-128 (10) field
Serial numbers + barcodes
Serials become operational when they're scannable. Download the CSV and feed it to the bulk barcode generator — Code 128 for grouped/sequential formats — to produce a label per unit. For regulated hardware (medical devices, aerospace), check whether your industry expects GS1 Application Identifier (21) structure instead; that lives in the GS1-128 generator.
Frequently asked questions
Is the serial number generator free?
Yes — unlimited batches up to 1,000 serials each, copy and CSV download, no account. Generation happens entirely in your browser.
Are the random serials cryptographically secure?
Yes — they come from the browser's CSPRNG (crypto.getRandomValues), the same source used for encryption keys. The default 4×4 grouped format has about 1.2×10²⁴ combinations.
Can two generated serials collide?
With grouped random or UUID formats, effectively never — the spaces are 10²⁴ and 10³⁶ respectively. Sequential serials are collision-free by construction as long as you don't restart the numbering.
Which format for product license keys?
Grouped random, 4–5 groups of 4–5 characters: easy to read over the phone, hard to guess, typo-resistant thanks to the unambiguous alphabet. Validate them in your software with a checksum or server-side list.
Can I turn serial numbers into barcodes?
Yes — download the CSV and open the bulk barcode generator; Code 128 handles every format this tool produces. For GS1-regulated products, serials belong in AI (21) of a GS1-128 or GS1 DataMatrix code.
