PNG for documents & web, SVG for print & designers — always free, no watermark, no signup.

Enter your 11-digit UPC number above and the generator calculates the check digit, validates the full code and renders a scanner-ready UPC-A barcode instantly. Need the compact UPC-E variant for small packaging? Pick “UPC-E” from the barcode type selector — the same validation rules apply.

Every download is free: PNG at up to 4x resolution for documents and marketplaces, or SVG vector for print-ready packaging artwork. No account, no watermark, no limits.

What is a UPC barcode?

UPC (Universal Product Code) is the barcode symbology behind virtually every retail checkout in the United States and Canada. A UPC-A encodes exactly 12 digits: a number-system digit, a 5-digit manufacturer code, a 5-digit product code, and a final check digit that lets scanners detect misreads. The manufacturer code is assigned by GS1 US, which is what makes every UPC globally unique — two companies can never accidentally share one.

UPC-E is the zero-suppressed sibling: it compresses certain UPC-A codes (those with runs of zeros in the manufacturer or product segment) down to 8 digits so the barcode fits on small packages like lip balms, gum packs and travel-size products. Scanners expand UPC-E back to its full UPC-A form automatically, so the two are interchangeable at the point of sale.

Who uses UPC barcodes?

If your product only circulates inside your own company — shelf bins, internal kits, asset tags — you don't need UPC at all. Code 128 is cheaper to manage and far more flexible, because UPC numbers must come from GS1.

  • Retail brands selling into US & Canadian stores — supermarkets, pharmacies, big-box retail all require a UPC-A (or EAN-13) on every sellable unit
  • Amazon sellers — FBA and FBM listings require a GS1 UPC (or EAN/ISBN) as the product identifier; Amazon verifies codes against the GS1 database
  • Etsy, Shopify and eBay sellers creating private-label products that need a real GTIN for Google Shopping and marketplace listings
  • Small manufacturers and food producers printing packaging with their GS1-assigned company prefix
  • Warehouses and 3PLs relabeling products for retail-compliance programs

UPC-A specifications & dimensions

Respect the quiet zones — the blank margins on either side of the bars. Cropping them is the number-one cause of UPC scan failures at retail. BarcodeOwl renders quiet zones automatically; just don't trim the image tight to the bars.

The check digit — calculated for you

The 12th digit of a UPC-A is a mod-10 checksum computed from the first 11 digits. When a scanner reads the barcode it recomputes the checksum; if it doesn't match, the scan is rejected instead of ringing up the wrong product. You never need to calculate it by hand: type your 11-digit GS1 number into the generator and the check digit is computed, appended and shown to you. If you paste a full 12-digit code, the generator verifies the check digit and flags a mismatch immediately — catching typos before they reach your packaging.

How to print UPC barcodes that scan

  • Use the SVG download for packaging artwork — it scales to any size with zero pixelation
  • Print at 300 DPI or higher; on thermal label printers, use the printer's native resolution so bars align to whole dots
  • Stay between 80% and 200% magnification — below 80%, many retail scanners start failing
  • Black bars on white background scan best; if you recolor, keep the bars much darker than the background
  • Always test the final print with a real scanner or phone app before a production run

Frequently asked questions

Is this UPC generator free?

Yes. Generating and downloading UPC-A and UPC-E barcodes — PNG and SVG — is free with no signup and no watermark. BarcodeOwl generates the barcode image; the UPC number itself must come from GS1 if you're selling through retail.

Do I need to buy a UPC code from GS1?

If your product will be sold by retailers or on Amazon, yes — you license a GS1 company prefix (or single GTINs via GS1 US) and assign product numbers yourself. BarcodeOwl turns your GS1 number into a standards-compliant barcode image. For purely internal labeling, use Code 128 instead — no GS1 license needed.

What's the difference between UPC-A and UPC-E?

UPC-A is the standard 12-digit retail barcode. UPC-E is an 8-digit compressed version for small packages; it can only represent UPC-A numbers that contain specific zero patterns. Scanners expand UPC-E back to UPC-A automatically, so both work at any checkout.

How do I find the check digit for my UPC?

You don't have to — enter your 11-digit number and BarcodeOwl calculates and appends the 12th check digit automatically. If you already have 12 digits, the generator verifies the check digit and warns you if it's wrong.

Can I use a generated UPC barcode for Amazon FBA?

Yes, as long as the underlying number is a genuine GS1-issued UPC registered to your brand. Amazon validates listing UPCs against the GS1 database and rejects numbers that aren't. Once your number checks out, paste it here, download the PNG/SVG and use it for your FNSKU labels or packaging.

UPC vs EAN — which one do I need?

UPC-A is the retail standard in the US and Canada; EAN-13 is the standard everywhere else. Modern scanners read both, and a UPC-A is technically an EAN-13 with a leading zero. If you sell internationally, EAN-13 is the safer choice; for US-only retail, UPC-A.
